Media Moves at CNN Business & The Cut, Two New Reporters Join WSJ
Rachel Metz has joined the newly re-branded CNN Business as a senior writer covering technology, effective Oct. 22. She is based in San Francisco and will focus on artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality. She was previously with MIT Technology Review, where she served as senior editor. Prior to that, she was with the Associated Press for five years
Ruth Spencer has been named deputy editor at The Cut. She will run news coverage and be responsible for feature projects, covering politics and #MeeToo in particular. Spencer joined the site in 2017 as senior editor, and prior to that served as the deputy features editor at The Guardian.
The Wall Street Journal has brought on two new reporters:
- Katherine Blunt has joined the staff as a reporter covering renewable energy and utilities. She comes from the Houston Chronicle, where she most recently served as energy reporter. Before that, she worked for the San Antonio Express-News.
- Jared S. Hopkins has joined The Wall Street Journal as a reporter, covering pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical manufacturers. He was previously with Bloomberg News for two years, and before that worked for the Chicago Tribune as an investigative reporter for seven years.
Tracy Merzi has been promoted to vice president of local markets for American City Business Journals, effective Nov. 1. She was previously the publisher of the Dallas Business Journal, and joined ACBJ in 2007 as advertising director for the Washington Business Journal.
INSIDER will welcome J.K. Trotter as an investigative reporter. He is currently a special projects reporter at Gizmodo and has been on staff since 2016. Before that, Trotter worked for Gawker Media for three years, and The Atlantic for before that.
Eric Brooks has been named assistant news director for KCBS-AM news radio in San Francisco, and begins his duties on Nov. 12. He comes from WTMJ-AM news radio in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he spent the last seven years in a variety of positions, including producer, program manager, and most recently, director of programming and news.
CBS-affiliated KEYE-TV in Austin, Texas, has hired Michelle Vargas as a morning reporter and fill-in anchor. She was previously a morning anchor and producer at KGBT-TV in Harlingen, Texas, and before that has reported for KABC-TV in Glendale, California and Azteca US.
Jason Cage has been promoted to music director at KHMX-FM radio in Houston. He will continue to be a PM drive time on-air personality for the station, a position he has held since 2017. Before that, he worked for WZMP-FM in Philadelphia as a morning host, and WBBM-FM in Chicago as a late-night host.
iHeartMedia has promoted Scott Davidson to program director for WHOF-FM in North Canton, Ohio. He will also continue hosting mornings. Davidson started his career in the 1980s at WDJQ and WNPQ and later worked in Florida at WCLB, WMBX, WOVV and WRMF West Palm Beach and WHYI Miami and WKDD Akron, Ohio.
