Media Moves at CNN & LA Times, New Antitrust Reporter at MLex
CNN has hired several political commentators located across the network's bureaus as well as the headquarters in Atlanta:
- Karen Finney has joined the team in Washington, D.C. as a political contributor. She is a former MSNBC weekend anchor and Hillary Clinton 2016 campaign spokesperson. She has also worked as a consultant to liberal watchdog group Media Matters.
- Luis V. Gutierrez has joined CNN's Chicago bureau as political commentator. He is a former member of Congress from the 4th District of Illinois.
- Mia Love has joined the network in Atlanta as political commentator. She is also a congresswoman in Utah's 4th congressional district.
- Former Ohio governor John Kasich has joined CNN as a senior political commentator. He will contribute to all of the network’s platforms. He made his debut Jan. 15 on "Cuomo Prime Time."
The Los Angeles Times has named Arash Markazi sports enterprise reporter and Page 2 columnist, effective Jan. 28. He will help the paper launch coverage of widely popular and emerging trends in sports, ranging from multiplayer gaming competitions to the legalization of sports betting. He will also write regular columns which will anchor an updated Page 2 in the Los Angeles Times Sports section. Markazi comes from ESPN, where he spent nine years covering the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Wimbledon and Tour de France. Prior to that he was a writer at Sports Illustrated.
Max Fillion is the new antitrust reporter for MLex Market Insight. He has been with the outlet since June 2018 and previously covered trade, data privacy, antitrust and other regulation. Before that, Fillion spent a semester as a Statehouse reporter for The Columbia Missourian, the daily community newspaper of the Missouri School of Journalism. He has also contributed to Vox Magazine in Missouri, and interned at MLex before that.
NPR has brought on Joshua Bote as a news assistant covering music. He is a recent graduate of UC Berkeley and just completed internships at Billboard and New York Magazine's shopping and e-commerce vertical, the Strategist. Bote has also worked at NPR Music, KQED — San Francisco's NPR affiliate, and has pieces published at the East Bay Express.
Coral Garnick has been promoted to associate editor for the Puget Sound Business Journal, overseeing special reports and features. She was previously a reporter at the Journal and has been on staff since 2016. Prior to that, Garnick spent three years as a business reporter at the Seattle Times.
Nexstar's WVLA-TV and WGMB-TV in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, have hired Joe Spadea as news director. He was previously the news director for KMTV-TV in Omaha, Nebraska for six years, and before that worked in the same capacity for KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Liz Schlemmer will join WFPL-FM radio in Louisville, Kentucky, Feb. 11 as an education reporter. She is currently wrapping up her duties as an education policy reporter at WUNC-FM North Carolina Public Radio, where she has reported from the state legislature and showed the connections between policy and real people. Before that, she interned at St. Louis Pubic Radio.
