Media Moves at AP & Business Insider, The New York Review of Books Names Two Top Editors

The New Republic has named a new publisher and consulting editorial director:

  • Kerrie Gillis has been named publisher of the magazine, effective Feb. 20. She succeeds Rachel Rosenfelt, who has relocated to California. Gillis was most recently chief revenue office for The Village Voice, and before that worked as a New York Times executive.
  • Chris Lehmann is now consulting editorial director for The New Republic. He is also the editor in chief of The Baffler, and the author of the “Jaundiced Eyeball” column. He has previously held roles at Newsday, New York magazine, The Washington Post, Congressional Quarterly, and Yahoo! News.

Jack Auresto has assumed the role of deputy Washington bureau chief for the Associated Press, a newly created position that aims to deepen the cross-format collaboration at the bureau.  He joined the AP in 2014, and since then has served as the broadcast unit manager for U.S. video working on coverage of big events and breaking news. Before that, Auresto was an assignment manager at WHGH-TV, the NBC affiliate in Boston, and broadcast manager at WFXT-TV, Boston’s Fox affiliate.

The New York Review of Books has named two top editors and an editor at large, almost six months after the departure of Ian Buruma, who abruptly left the outlet in September 2018:

  • Emily Greenhouse has joined the intellectual journal as a co-editor. She comes from the New Yorker, where she served as managing editor since 2016. Prior to that, she worked as a writer for Bloomberg Politics. Greenhouse also worked at the Review in 2011 and 2012, as an editorial assistant to Robert Silvers, the co-founder of the outlet.
  • Gabriel Winslow-Yost has been promoted to co-editor. He began working at the Review, also as an editorial assistant to Silvers, in 2009, and moved up the editorial ranks to become a senior editor.
  • Daniel Mendelsohn has assumed the newly created role of editor at large. He is a longtime contributor to the Review and has also written for Travel + Leisure and New York magazine; in addition, he is the author of several books.

Shraddha Chakradhar has been hired by STAT to write the Morning Rounds newsletter. She replaces Megan Thielking, who has shifted to covering health, medicine and science for the outlet as a reporter.  Chakradhar comes with nearly six years of experience as a reporter and editor, most recently as the associate news editor of the biomedical research journal Nature Medicine. Prior to that, she worked at NOVA and other science documentary production companies as a researcher.

Insider Inc. has recruited Siddhartha Mahanta as features editor, working at both Business Insider and Insider. He previously spent three years at The Atlantic, most recently as an associate editor, and before that worked for Foreign Policy magazine as an assistant editor.

Mychaela Bruner has joined Fox-owned KTVI-TV in St. Louis, Missouri, as a reporter and producer. She was previously an anchor/reporter for WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky for five years, and before that spent three years at KOMU-TV in Columbia, Missouri, as a reporter.
