Media Moves at AP & Politico, Car & Driver Names New Top Editor

After more than a decade at the helm of Politico, editor John Harris has stepped down from his editorial duties to join the news organization’s corporate board. He co-founded the publication in 2007 alongside Robert Allbritton and Jim VandHei, and since has transformed the newsroom of 30 staffers to an operation with more than 300 journalists. With his departure, come the following editorial appointments:

·         Matthew Kaminski has been named editor in chief. He most recently served as Politico’s global editor and has been on staff since 2014, when he joined as executive editor of the European edition. Before that he spent almost two decades at The Wall Street Journal.

·         Natasha Bertrand has joined the staff as national security correspondent. She will continue as a contributor on MSNBC. Bertrand has previously worked for The Atlantic and Business Insider.

The Associated Press has relocated Will Weissert from Austin to Washington, D.C., where he will serve as a political reporter covering the 2020 presidential campaign and focusing on the Beto O’Rourke’s run for president. Weissert has been in the Texas bureau for eight-and-a-half-years and covered state politics as a bureau chief, including the 2018 Senate race between Se. Ted Cruz and Beto O’Rourke.  He joined the AP in 2000 as a correspondent in Guatemala City, and later spent six years in the Mexico City bureau, and three years in Havana, Cuba after that.

Sharon Silke Carty has been named editor in chief at Car and Driver, replacing Eddie Alterman who is now the new chief brand officer for Hearst Autos. Silke Carty is a veteran automotive journalist and comes from the industry business publication Automotive News, where she headed a team reporting on urban mobility, new technology, and autonomous vehicles. She has also been editor in chief of Autoblog/AOL Autos and Yahoo Autos as well as Detroit bureau chief for USA Today, where she covered the auto industry.

The Los Angeles Times has tapped Emily Baumgaertner as science and medicine reporter. She was previously a news assistant at The New York Times, and before that spent three years at the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting as a journalist and health projects coordinator.

Medium has launched a new tech and science publication named OneZero. Michael Zelenko has been named features director and will continue to serve in the same position at Medium. He was previously with The Verge and The Fader. Will Oremus has joined the team as senior writer. He was most recently a senior tech writer at Slate and had been with the magazine since 2012.

Meghan McCarty Carino has joined American Public Media and the radio program “Marketplace” as a reporter covering workplace issues.  She previously spent nine years at KPCC-FM public radio in Pasadena, California, in a variety of positions, and most recently served as mobility reporter.

WOGL-FM in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has hired Frank Lario as a host on the new “Frank & Marilyn in the Morning” show airing weekdays from 5:30 -- 9 a.m. Lario was most recently morning co-host at Beasley Media Group country WXTU, leaving that position in November 2018.
