The New Republic has announced the expansion of its editorial team by hiring three new staff members:
· Gregg Levine has joined as senior editor and will focus on political analysis and opinion, as well as climate and inequality reporting. He comes to the magazine with more than 13 years of experience as an investigative journalist covering U.S. politics, energy, the environment, and infrastructure. Levine has held senior editorial positions at The Nation and Al Jazeera America digital, and was managing editor of the award-winning news blog Firedoglake.
· Alex Pareene has joined as a staff writer and will handle long-running ideological and policy debate analyses, and profiles of major players on the American political scene. He was previously the politics editor for Splinter and has also helmed Gawker as editor in chief and Deadspin as editor. Pareene has also written for print publications including Columbia Journalism Review, Salon, The Washington Post’s Outlook section, and The Baffler.
· Walter Shapiro has joined the magazines as a staff writer on a part-time basis and will focus on the 2020 Presidential election. He splits his time between the outlet's New York and Washington, D.C. offices, and will continue his duties as a political columnist for Roll Call. He has been a has been a frequent contributor to The New Republic since 1980, and has also worked for USA Today, Time and Newsweek.
Brittany Shepherd has joined Yahoo News as a national political reporter, covering the intersection of culture and politics, as well as the 2020 presidential campaign. She previously spent a year as a staff writer at The Washingtonian and covered the societal and cultural scene in the capital. Prior to that, Shepherd was a White House Correspondent for Independent Journal Review.
The Guardian US has hired Kari Paul as a technology reporter based in Oakland, California. She comes from MarketWatch, where she spent the last three years as a personal finance reporter covering teach and culture. She has also freelanced for publications including The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Quartz, Elle, Cosmopolitan, VICE magazine, and others.
Rowan Walrath is the new staff writer for BostInno, covering Boston-area startups. She previously had a brief stint at Wired as a researcher and before that worked for Boston magazine. Walrath has also reported and fact-checked for Mother Jones, Eater, and HuffPost, among other publications.
PureWow has recruited Dena Silver as fashion editor. She is also a beauty, fashion and lifestyle freelancer with bylines at CR Fashion Book, The Times UK, Coveteur, Yahoo Style, Hamptons Magazine, Haute Living and more. Silver has also worked for The Observer digital as lifestyle editor and senior style editor.
Remy Blaire has joined Asset TV as head of content and lead anchor and will handle all editorial content, video offerings, and partner programming in the U.S., Canada and Latin America. She succeeds Laura J. Kellar who left in January. Blaire comes from Sprott US Media, where she served as managing editor. Before that she worked for JS3 Multimedia as senior markets reporter.
CoStar News has tapped Cara Smith-Tenta as a Chicago-based breaking news reporter and covers commercial real estate, construction, and economic development. She was most recently a freelance journalist reporting on business, real estate and startups for various publications, including InnovationMap, Houstonia Magazine and the Houston Business Journal. Before that worked at the Houston Business Journal for four years as a commercial real estate reporter.
