The Wall Street Journal has made two key leadership editorial appointments:
· Lora Western has been named deputy publishing chief. She is a veteran staffer of The Journal and has been with the paper for more than two decades. Most recently she served as inaugural Washington news editor in New York. Western joined The Journal in 1992 as an editor at The Wall Street Journal Asia in Hong Kong, and has since served as deputy managing editor, New York-based news desk editor, and editor of corporate coverage on the digital team.
· Darren Everson has been named deputy chief news editor. He was most recently the editor of Global Journal, leading the group that produces the Asia and Europe print editions of The Wall Street Journal. He is also one of the original members of the Journal’s sports department, where he later became deputy. He joined the Journal in 2006 as a reporter covering the business of travel. Before that, Everson was a sports reporter at the Daily News and New York Post.
Larry Edelman, the deputy managing editor for the Boston Globe, has been named a business columnist at the paper and will pencil a column focusing on business, finance, and markets. Edelman was the Globe’s business editor for five years in the ‘90s, and again from May 2015 to May 2017 before becoming deputy managing editor. In between his Globe years, he was a senior editor at The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News.
The New York Times has welcomed Jake Grovum as a social editor on the Off-Platform team. He comes from The Financial Times, where he most recently served as the first United States head of audience engagement. Prior to joining The F.T., Jake worked as a senior staff writer and social media editor for Stateline.org at the Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington, covering national trends in state policy and politics.
Hugh Dellios has been named editor of The Crain’s Forum, a newly launched yearlong project of Crain’s Chicago Business aimed to address “seemingly intractable problems” facing Chicago and Illinois. Dellios is a former editor at the Chicago Tribune, Associated Press and NPR, and edits all stories, columns and editorials, on topics ranging from pensions to education funding.
Gizmodo-owned tech and science website io9 has promoted James Whitbrook to news editor, effective July 1. He most recently served as a staff writer and joined Gizmodo in 2014. io9 covers all things science fiction, including books, movies, television and comic books, as well as real science news. It was acquired by Gizmodo in 2014.
Jonathon Dornbush has been promoted to senior editor at IGN.com, upped from news editor. He will continue to host and produce for IGN Now. He has been with IGN since 2016, when he joined the staff as an associate editor. Before that, Dornbush spent a year at Entertainment Weekly as an assistant editor. IGN.com was created as an entertainment and video games site for young men. It delivers current entertainment and game news and information, and focuses on men's digital lifestyle, PC and console games, wireless games, movies, TV and more.
Medium’s science and technology website OneZero has brought on Emily Mullin as a reporter on the biotech beat. She was most recently a freelance writer and wrote stories about science, medicine and biotechnology for The Washington Post, Scientific American, The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, STAT News, Science, Quartz, Medium, Neo.Life and others. From 2016 to 2018 she also served as an associate editor for biomedicine at MIT Technology Review.
Suzanne Nadell has re-joined ABC’s WSB-TV in Atlanta as news director. She spent the last six years as a news director at WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and KOKI-TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and served as an executive producer at WSB-TV from 2006 until 2013.
Replacing the newly departed Suzanne Nadell at NBC’s WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as news director is Scott Trabandt. He was most recently the managing editor at the station and has been on staff since 2016. Prior to that, he worked for NBC Universal for several years.
