Media Moves at VICE & CNN Business, Wirecutter Hires Deputy Editor

 

VICE Media continues making editorial staff changes after it let go two top editors in June:

·         Erika Allen has joined the company as digital executive managing editor. She has returned to Vice after working at New York Magazine’s The Cut as senior editor of culture. Before that, she worked at The Outline where she served as managing editor, and later as executive editor. Before that, she was deputy editor at Vice Magazine. She joined Vice in 2015 from The New York Times, where she was one of two founding editors of Times Insider.

·         Meredith Balkus has been named digital associate managing editor. She most recently served as international editor for Vice.com and before that spent two years as global associate editor. She joined Vice in 2017 as translation and content coordinator and before that worked for Thrillist Media Group.

Mark Naida has joined CNN Business as an editor for Perspectives, the outlet’s op-ed vertical. He comes from a one-year stint at the Detroit News, where he served as an opinion editor and managed the Op-Ed section’s social media pages. Before that, he hosted a weekly radio show from Hillsdale College.

The Associated Press has tapped Sally Stapleton to direct global religion coverage as the global religion editor. She oversees a new team that reports on faith and its influence around the world.  Stapleton comes from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette where she served a managing editor and led the newsroom’s transformation to digital-first operation. She has also served on the board of directors for the Associated Press Media Editors organization for the past three years.  From 1990 to 2004, Stapleton worked in a variety of photo leadership positions for the AP, including deputy executive photo editor, overseeing all aspects of AP’s photo operation.

A.D. Quig has been hired to cover government and politics for Crain’s Chicago Business.  She comes from The Daily Line, a subscription newsletter on state and local politics, where she served as a reporter and producer since 2015. She has also previously worked for Rivet Radio and NPR.

Wirecutter, The New York Times-owned product recommendation site, has recruited Jason Chen as deputy editor. He was most recently the deputy editor of The Strategist, New York Magazine’s product vertical and Wirecutter’s biggest rival. Chen has also previously worked as senior editor at Departures and associate style editor at Details.

Kayln Belsha is the new Chicago-based national education reporter for Chalkbeat. She covers issues facing schools serving low-income students and efforts to improve those schools. Belsha previously spent three years on the education beat at The Chicago Reader. She has also covered education for Catalyst Chicago and Tribune Publishing.

NBC affiliate in Seattle, Washington, KING-TV, has hired Peter Saiers as news director. He will assume the same duties at sister station KONG-TV. Saiers was most recently an executive producer at Disney ABC in San Francisco, and before that worked at KPIX-TV in San Francisco, where he spent 13 years as executive producer and as managing editor. Prior to that, he spent eight years at KOVR-TV in Sacramento, California.

Patrick Osburn has been promoted to general manager of KCSN-FM alternative radio in Southern California. He has been on staff since 2017 and since then has served as director of business development. He has spent more than 30 years in the radio industry.

IowaWatch, the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism which produces investigative pieces written by student journalists under the guidance of seasoned reporters, has hired Suzanne Behnke as executive director; she starts in August. She comes from the Des Moines Business Record, where she has been an editor and contributor since May 2017. Before that, she had two stints worked at the Des Moines Register. She began her career at the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier in 1997 as a reporter, copy editor and page designer.
