Amnesty Media Awards 2020

Amnesty International UK is inviting entries for its 28th annual Media Awards, a prestigious set of awards that recognise the vital role journalists play and the serious risks they face in highlighting human rights abuses around the world. Entries can now be submitted at: amnesty-media-awards.org.uk. The closing date for entries is Thursday 23 January 2020 and the award ceremony will be held in London on Wednesday 22 April 2020. Entries must be from a media outlet based in the UK and published or broadcast for the first time in the UK between 1 January and 31 December 2019.

Steve Hewlett Memorial Lecture 2019

Mark Thompson, President and CEO of The New York Times Company, and former Director General of the BBC, will deliver this year's Steve Hewlett Memorial Lecture.

The net proceeds from the event will go to the Steve Hewlett Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to journalism and TV production students from low-income backgrounds. BBC Studios will sponsor the post-lecture drinks reception.

It takes place on Tuesday 24 September, at 6pm for a 6.30pm start, at The University of Westminster, 4-12 Little Titchfield Street, London, W1W 7BY. Book tickets here.

Lessons from a journalist: How to secure media coverage
Freelance journalist Suzanne Bearne, who writes for national titles including The Guardian, The Observer and the BBC and runs The Guardian's PR and Marketing Masterclass, is running a workshop in Edinburgh this month, as well as her regular webinars which can be watched from the comfort of your own home.

Delving into her 12 years' experience as a journalist across trade, national and consumer titles, Suzanne will offer guidance on working with the press, the creative and fun ways to be featured in the media, how to pitch a journalist, what to include in a press release, how to take advantage of digital platforms, and provide tips on building relationships with both in-house and freelance journalists.

NGOS and the Media: The Insiders' Guide to Achieving Press Coverage
There are hundreds of charities competing to get their stories and messages into the media. In this training morning, award-winning journalist Tom Parry and Nine Media co-founder, journalist and charity comms expert Karen Attwood will teach you the most effective ways to maximise your chances of getting coverage for your organisation from the field. This might be through content that your charity has collected and that you wish to pitch into the media, via press trips where journalists are taken to visit your programmes or by using your spokespeople effectively.
How to get your content from the field into the media covers the do’s and don’ts of getting stories and photographs your organisation has collected into the media, as well as techniques to find and contact journalists and publications which cover humanitarian issues.
What the media want from a spokesperson will explore how the media and the relationship with charity spokespeople.
How to organise a successful field trip has Tom and Karen using their own first-hand experience to explain how to organise the most effective press trips to the field.

After joining Gorkana (now Cision) as a two month temp, I have stayed for 10 years, with the last 7.5 years editing our alerts.
