POLITICO has named Andy Blatchford Canada-based reporter, tasked to help start the outlet’s operations in Ottawa as POLITICO expands it policy coverage in Canada. He will dive into a new beat that will cover tech policy in detail, including the challenges of data privacy, digital taxes and economy, artificial intelligence and social media regulations. Blatchford will also cover broader economic and political stories from Ottawa. He previously covered politics, economics, finance, trade and the Bank of Canada for The Canadian Press and had been on staff since 2007.
Phillip Picardi has exited Out magazine after a year as the editor in chief. He has also announced last month that he is the new grooming columnist for GQ magazine. Prior to helming Out, Picardi served as the digital editorial director for Teen Vogue, where he launched the site’s wellness and political coverage. Before that, Picardi worked for Refinery29 as senior beauty editor.
The Omaha World-Herald in Nebraska has hired Randy Essex as executive editor, effective Jan. 1, 2020. He comes from the Detroit Free Press where he most recently served as the senior content director for business coverage. Prior to that, Essex served as a panelist on the “Valley Roundup” show on Aspen Public Radio, and before that ran the Post Independent/Citizen Telegram paper in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
Caroline Hroncich has joined the staff of Business Insider as career and strategy associate editor and covers workplace and careers. She was most recently a senior editor for Employee Benefit News and Employee Benefit Adviser.
Bloomberg News reporter Natalie Wong has relocated to the New York bureau to cover commercial real estate. She most recently covered the same beat for the news service in Toronto, Canada. Prior to that, Wong served as a community news reporter for Ckut Radio, the campus community radio station of McGill University.
Darcy Reddan is the new reporter at Reorg and covers mergers and acquisitions. He comes from Law360.com, where he reported on M&As, asset management and capital markets for the Deals Team. Before that, Reddan served as a freelance writer for Canada Sports Betting.
The Redfin Blog has brought on Lily Katz as a data journalist covering residential real estate and the housing market in Seattle, Washington. She comes from Bloomberg Daybreak, where she served as a reporter/editor since September. She had been with Bloomberg since 2016 when she joined as market reporter.
Tim Staskiewicz has been promoted to digital program director for Beasley Media Group’s entire Boston cluster, which includes WBOS-FM, WKLB-FM, WROR-FM, WBQT-FM and WBZ-FM radio stations. Staskiewicz most recently was responsible for managing the digital programming efforts on behalf of WBZ-FM and WKLB-FM. He has been with the company since 2017 and before that served as the digital content director for CBS Radio in Boston.
KIFI-TV, the ABC station in Idaho Falls, Idaho, has bid farewell to Jay Hildebrandt, who has retired after a 35-year-long broadcast career. He anchored the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. shows alongside Karole Honas, his co-anchor of 29 years.
