As we continue to practice social distancing and many of us are working from home, learning events for bloggers and content creators are being moved to virtual formats.
May has several opportunities to network and improve your skills. And if the days are starting to blur together, these events can provide a nice change of pace.
This is a free, one-hour video tutorial from Poynter that will teach newer journalists "how to seamlessly combine audio, video and copy in captivating news packages." It's hosted by veteran reporter and instructor Al Tompkins.
If you're looking to improve your creative skills in a certain area or learn an entirely new skill, this is a great tool. Skillshare is an online learning community with thousands of courses to choose from. Classes cover a range of topics, including photography, graphic design, social media, and how to write to go viral. There are free classes available, but there also are team plans and premium memberships to take advantage of.
This challenge was created by Lena Gott, founder of What Mommy Does and Adventures in Blogging. The free course will teach bloggers how to 1) simplify their strategy; 2) implement income pathways; 3) perfect their calls to action; 4) perform effective keyword research; and 5) figure out the single metric they should be tracking.
Social Media Camp is Canada's largest social media conference. Originally scheduled for early May, the event was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. In its place, the company is launching SMClub, a membership program that will give members access to monthly webinars, virtual networking opportunities, exclusive social media resources, and discounts to SMC pop-up events in the future. Registration for SMClub opened May 1.
In light of COVID-19, Social Media Week is combining its New York and Los Angeles events into one virtual event, #SMWONE. Social Media Week's mission is to "give professionals at the intersection of media, marketing, and technology the insights, ideas, and opportunities they need to advance themselves and their organizations in a globally connected world." The initial lineup of speakers includes experts from Vox Media and Instagram. Sessions announced so far range from "The Do's & Don'ts of Video: Making an Impact With What You Have" to "The Neuroscience of Storytelling in Times of Crisis" and "The Power of Podcast in the Digital World." The event will be "a first-of-its-kind conferences series that will deliver live content, talks, panel sessions and workshops, together with on-demand content, product demos, attendee hangouts and networking experiences that will span a four-week period."
"How can journalists ensure that a variety of voices and perspectives are informing news coverage? And what can we do to close the gap for traditionally undercovered groups, which are among the most vulnerable?" This quick 30-minute session will provide journalists tools to ensure diversity both within the newsroom and in their coverage. This free session will be hosted by Doris Truong, Poynter’s director of training and diversity, and Steve Bien-Aimé, lead instructor for the Poynter-Koch Media Journalism Fellowship and an assistant professor at Northern Kentucky University.
Tim Herrera, the Smart Living Editor for The New York Times, will host this Zoom webinar with a panel of editors to discuss what makes a good pitch, and what doesn't. Can't make this call? No problem, as the workshops will be held every Sunday.
"From UX to storytelling, accessibility to structure, Confab brings together those who are committed to making content more useful and usable." Program areas include user experience design, content design for AI and bots, and editorial assignments and calendars. On March 24, organizers announced the event has been switched to an online-only format. The digital event will feature a live broadcast of speakers, Q&A sessions, live demos, and more. All conference content will be available in a digital library for a full year.
BlogHer announced nine free virtual events for 2020 to help women content creators, influencers, and entrepreneurs access its content and provide "access to the inspiration and information they’ll need to help their small businesses survive and, hopefully, thrive when the market starts to recover." The Healthy at Home event offers a half day of free programming to "help you keep your business buzzing, your mindset healthy, and your bodies powerful and ready to take on our new normal."
