CisionNavigator’s Fashion & Beauty Buzz e-newsletter goes out today and this week we spent time with Melissa Poster, blogger at Fashion Trend Guide and The Key To Chic, and lover of bold colors.

Q: What do you like most about being a fashion editor and blogger?
A: There are so many things that I love about blogging. The creative freedom that comes with it is something that I appreciate each and every day. In my five-and-a-half years as a fashion blogger, I’ve also been able to meet amazing and creative people, make friends with similar interests, attend trade shows, and improve my photography, writing, social media, and graphic design skills.

Q: How did you get started in the industry?
A: I’ve always had a strong interest in fashion trends, and while working on my college degree, I completed internships in fashion PR and trend forecasting. I quickly realized that fashion forecasting embodied everything that I love and enjoy: traveling, documenting trends, photography, conducting market research, and shopping. Internships are extremely important to getting your foot in the door and finding out what type of career you want.

Q: What are some hot trends we can look out for this fall?
A: This fall, I’m enthusiastic about the return of glamorous Baroque details and luxe textures such as brocades and metallics. I’ll be pulling lots of velvet from the depths of my closet! I’m also looking forward to wearing earthy, heritage-inspired looks that incorporate such prints and fabrics as plaid, tweed, and Fair Isle knits. Lastly, printed and coated denim in all forms (waxed, paisley, camouflage, and dark florals) is something that fits my personal style. Colorful jeans are my new wardrobe staple.

Q: What are some trends you’re sick of seeing already?
A: It’s rare that I don’t like a trend, but the emergence of religious symbolism and crosses on tees, jewelry, and leggings is a trend that I’ll likely pass on.

Q: If you had to choose one outfit to wear every day, what would it look like?
A: I’m a practical girl at heart, and I adore wearing color, so I’d opt for boldly printed skinny jeans with a comfortable top, and then I’d accessorize with statement rings, layered bracelets, simple hair, a fringe handbag, and embellished but comfortable ankle boots.

Q: Any tips for PR professionals who want to get in contact with you?
A: I’m easy to reach via e-mail or you can visit my blogs.  My best tip is to qualify your leads before you pitch. Please read my blog (even if briefly) before pitching to get an idea of what topics I cover and how to work with me. For example, The Key To Chic mainly covers personal style, shopping, travel diaries, and event coverage from a personal point of view. Fashion Trend Guide covers trend forecasting, style advice, and fashion reviews. Pitching celebrity style wouldn’t be a good match for my content, however, pitching footwear trends or upcoming fashion designer collaborations would be a great match.

Q: What are your PR pet peeves, or what is the strangest pitch you’ve received?
A: Attention to detail, accuracy, and good follow-through go a long way. Including my name and my blog’s name (spelled correctly) adds a personal touch to the e-mail so that it doesn’t seem like an impersonal e-mail blast.  I have received pitches throughout the years addressed to my blog as “Fashion Trend Guy” and “Fashion Trend” instead of “Fashion Trend Guide”. Getting the correct name and spelling of the blog in the subject line is key to getting me to read the e-mail.
