Weekly Feature for Fashion & Beauty Fanatics: Q&A with Shirley Lau

It’s that time of the week again – Fashion & Beauty Buzz – and today’s special guest is Shirley Lau, founder and editor in chief of Minted, an online resource for the modern career girl.

Q: What kinds of fashion and/or beauty advice should we expect from Minted, since the magazine focuses on career women?
A: At Minted, all our advice is “for the modern career girl.” When it comes to our fashion and beauty content, we focus on office-appropriate outfits, day-to-night wardrobe pieces that take you from the office to happy hour, and skincare products we’re swooning over.

Q: What are some upcoming fashion- or beauty-related trends can career women should be aware of?
A: Bold stripes and and shorts suits! Stripes have always been a classic go-to look, but now is the time to go big or go home. Think bold colors and thick stripes, and it’s even ok to wear stripes on the top and bottom. Go crazy with it! As for shorts suits, it’s the perfect way to still look fashionable while sporting a little leg.

Q: What are some tips for other fashion bloggers/journalists just starting out?
A: 
For bloggers, I recommend getting in touch with other bloggers in your same area of interest–it’s a great way to cross-promote, and especially helpful to you if you’re just starting out. Also, make sure your blog posts are easy to read, in terms of font, site design and layout, and visuals. There’s nothing more annoying to a reader than having to figure out how to navigate a blog–it should be easy!  As for journalists (no, they’re not the same as bloggers!), it’s good to keep in mind that you’ll probably have to work the midnight oil and pay your dues as an intern. Also, be sure to keep track of all your sources and their contact info from all your stories. You’ll never know when someone might be useful for a future story, and it beats digging through your old emails for phone numbers.

Q: Any tips for PR professionals who want to get in contact with you?
A: 
We’re flooded with pitches every hour, so sometimes emails fall through the cracks. It’s always best to follow up in case we missed it. Or, try sending your email at the beginning of the work day–that way, it’s at the top of my inbox when I check it in the morning.

Q: What are you PR pet peeves, or what is the strangest pitch you’ve received?
A: 
Minted covers a gamut of topics, but there are definitely things we don’t cover. Make sure whatever you’re pitching is a right fit for the media contact you’re sending it to. For example, I shouldn’t be receiving the latest in men’s fashion or hard news pitches that wouldn’t work for a soft news site like Minted.
