Challenge

Despite being around for 25+ years, the Center for Environmental Health struggled to raise awareness of its programs, educational materials, and advocacy work – in part because it lacked a dedicated communications department to drive outreach to consumers and agencies.

Solution

To secure more press coverage and thought leadership opportunities, the small but mighty team needed access to easy-to-use tools for discovering relevant media contacts and managing, executing, and measuring their earned media impact. They found exactly that in Cision’s media monitoring and journalist outreach solutions.

Results

Cision’s solutions allow the Center for Environmental Health to focus its outreach efforts on the most relevant and up-to-date media outlets and journalists. This has proven significantly more efficient than past processes, freeing the team to spend time on content and messaging rather than administrative and operational tasks. Cision's media intelligence solution also gives the team visibility into the impact of its outreach, enabling it to report essential metrics and demonstrate ROI to its board and donors.

We spoke with Emily DiFrisco, Director of Communications at the Center for Environmental Health, about how the organization uses Cision to build a modern communications strategy and increase the visibility of its public health advocacy work.

Improving public health communications strategies

The Center for Environmental Health set out to build out a new communications strategy to raise the visibility of its important work protecting people’s health – a particular challenge given the size of its communications team.

CEH had been relying on Excel and spending significant time on manual tasks to manage its media contacts. New efficiencies were necessary to advance the organization's mission and goals.

Finding Cision’s all-in-one PR and comms platform

One of the first decisions made by Emily DiFrisco, CEH’s Senior Director of Communications, was to consult with Cision about potential communications solutions that could help the organization increase its reach and measure its PR impact.

Through those conversations, CEH identified the need for a centralized platform that could support media discovery, outreach execution, and performance measurement.

By implementing Cision’s media intelligence and journalist outreach solutions, the organization gained access to up-to-date journalist contacts and tools to manage and measure earned media efforts more efficiently.

“When we have our press release ready to go, it’s so easy to be able to send that e-mail with Cision and be able to select the audience. We have such varied programs that it’s really great to be able to use the journalist database and be able to pitch different journalists and make sure that it’s going to the ones who are actually interested in it”

A more efficient approach to media outreach

Before using Cision, the Center for Environmental Health relied on internally maintained spreadsheets to track journalist contacts. Over time, these lists became outdated as reporters moved between outlets or changed beats.

Cision’s traditional media and social media influencer database has been instrumental in securing coverage and maximizing the reach of CEH’s news and announcements.

Thanks to Cision’s targeting and filtering tools, pitches and external communications now reach the right audiences, at the right time – free from duplicates and outdated contact information.

“We used to have our own lists of journalists in spreadsheets that got out of date. I like that the journalist database is continually updated, so you go in and find the right folks – because journalists move around all the time. That’s one challenge that Cision has helped us solve”

Measuring impact and demonstrating ROI

Cision’s media monitoring and PR reporting tools allow the Center for Environmental Health to track coverage, analyze performance, and report on meaningful metrics.

This visibility enables the communications team to demonstrate the value of its earned media efforts and keep board members and donors informed of its outreach impact.

Impact on communications workflows

Cision helps streamline CEH’s processes, enabling a small team to do more with less.

The all-in-one solution helps the team target pitches to the right audiences, measure the impact of its PR and communications strategies, and demonstrate the value of the department to the broader organization.
