PBS NewsHour has promoted Amna Nawaz to chief correspondent, upped from senior national correspondent. She will also serve as the newscast's Friday White House correspondent as well as will co-anchor and anchor some prime time and other special coverage and continue to serve as Judy Woodruff‘s primary substitute anchor. Nawaz will also remain host of PBS’ prime time arts series "Beyond the Canvas." Nawaz joined the PBS NewsHour in April 2018 as a correspondent and has since co-moderated PBS NewsHour’s Democratic Primary Debate with Politico in December 2019.

Roll Call has welcomed Alec Snyder as committee reporter and covers the committees in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. He was most recently part of CNN's new Voting Rights team and reported on legislation impacting voting rights, accessibility, and reform. Before that, Snyder spent several months at McClatchy as growth and development reporter.

Ramesh Ponnuru has been promoted to editor of the National Review, replacing Rich Lowry who will step down after 24 years at the helm of the magazine. Lowry will continue to serve in his current job until the end of 2021, and will transition to the role of CEO in January 2022. Ponnuru is a longtime NR editor and joined the magazine in 1999. He has also been a columnist at Bloomberg Opinion for more than a decade.

The New York Times Magazine has named Jeannie Choi managing editor, upped from assistant managing editor. She joined the magazine in 2013 as a web producer, and before that spent a year as an online associate editor of Bread of the World. Choi has also previously served as the web editor of Sojourners Magazine.  

Vulture has hired Julie Kosin as senior TV editor, a position she'll take over later in July. Kosin comes from Elle magazine where she was the senior culture editor overseeing all editorial content in culture vertical, including film, TV, book, music, podcast, theater, and art coverage. Prior to that, Kosin spent five years at Harper's Bazaar.

New York magazine's The Cut has announced two new hires:

  • Jen Ortiz will join the site July 18 as deputy editor and will oversee the Cut’s day-to-day editorial operations, working with writers and editors to set the site’s direction and execute long-term special projects. She comes from Cosmopolitan, where she has been deputy editor since 2018, and before that has worked at Marie Claire as senior editor.
  • Jessica Willis has joined The Cut as style director. She will conceive and style original photo shoots featured across the Cut’s platforms, from monthly digital covers to the fall fashion issue in print. Willis has previously worked with Apple, Jil Sander, Tiffany & Co., Vogue, and WSJ Magazine.

Lukas I. Alpert will join Marketwatch July 12 to cover financial crime and scams. He comes over from The Wall Street Journal where he has been a media reporter since 2014. Before that, he worked at The Journal’s Moscow bureau. In 2019, Alpert was part of a team awarded the Pulitzer Prize in national reporting for uncovering Donald Trump’s hush money payments to women who claimed to have had affairs with him. Previously, Alpert worked for the Daily News, the New York Post and the Associated Press. 

New York Business Journal has hired Leonard A. Robinson as a reporter covering commercial real estate and economic development. Most recently, he was a reporter for the Student Journalism Institute at The New York Times, and before that served as a contributor for the Dayton Business Journal.

Shoshana Dubnow is the new associate editor at Biopharma Dive. She comes from Kaiser Health News, where she served as a reporter and database manager on "Lost on the Frontline," a collaborative project between Kaiser Health News and The Guardian US documenting health care workers who die from Covid-19 after exposure at their workplace.

Cherie Grzech is heading to Nexstar Media’s NewsNation as its VP of news and managing editor. She will oversee NewsNation’s day-to day news gathering and production process and supervise a staff of more than 100. Grzech comes from Fox News, where she has served as the VP of the Washington bureau since 2018. She had been at Fox since 1999.

The New York Times has named Mary Suh education editor. Most recently, she served as the acting op-ed editor and before that spent almost two years at The Atlantic as senior editor of AtlanticLive. During her first stint at The Times, Suh served as the deputy editor of several sections, including Culture, Politics, the Week in Review and Styles.

Allyson R. Waller has joined the Texas Tribune as a general assignment reporter. She comes from The New York Times where she was an express/breaking news fellow. Waller has also interned at The Daily Dot, Miami Herald, The Bryan-College Station Eagle and Houstonia Magazine.

Paul Bomberger is now senior business reporter at the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. He has been at the paper since 2018 and most recently served as the business/Metro editor. Prior to that, Bomberger has held editorial positions at The Houston Chronicle and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Sportico has hired Asli Pelit as sports deals reporter covering finance and private equity. She spent the past year as a Knight-Bagehot fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and before that worked at Voice of America, VICE, and USA Today Sports.  

Erin Marquis is the new lead editor for computer/networking at Wirecutter. Most recently, she led day-to-day operations at Jalopnik for four years as managing editor, and before that spent three years at MRC Worldwide and four years at the Autoblog.

Protocol has announced the launch of its new Workplace vertical and has hired the following staff to run the page:

  • Megan Morrone has joined as the editor of Workplace. She comes from Medium where she served as senior platform editor.  
  • Amber Burton has joined as a reporter and covers work-related tech issues. She was previously at The Wall Street Journal as personal finance reporter.
  • Allison Levitsky has joined as a reporter covering post-pandemic workplace tech  stories. She previously was a reporter at the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
  • Sarah Roach has been hired as a junior reporter/producer. She a recent graduate of George Washington University. 
  • EdSurge co-founder Elizabeth Corcoran has joined Protocol as a contributing editor and columnist.
