San Diego Magazine has hired Jackie Bryant as managing editor. She is a local freelance writer known for specializing in cannabis business and culture. In her new role at the magazine, she plans to continue writing “Cannabitch,” a monthly newsletter published on the Substack platform. Bryant is a former contributor to San Diego Magazine with previous articles about travel, food, wine, spirits and the arts. She also has written about restaurants for Eater San Diego and she wrote a cocktail column for Ranch & Coast Magazine for five years.
Jim Ryan has joined The Seattle Times as assistant metro editor, leading coverage of criminal justice issues and institutions. He previously spent seven years at The Oregonian/OregonLive.com, where he was most recently the breaking news editor. Ryan has also previously helmed The Post Athens in Ohio and also served as radio host at WOUB Public Media in Athens, Ohio.
The Emancipator, a free news outlet for commentary on racial justice published in collaboration with The Boston Globe and Boston University's Center of Antiracist Research has launched, and is helmed by two co-editor in chiefs:
- Deborah D. Douglas has joined the outlet as co-editor in chief. She has served as the Eugene S. Pulliam Distinguished Visiting Professor of Journalism at DePauw University in Indiana and a senior leader at The OpEd Project, which amplifies underrepresented expert voices. Douglas is also the founding managing editor of MLK50: Justice Through Journalism.
- Amber Payne has joined the staff as co-editor in chief. She was a 2021 Nieman fellow at Harvard University, and served as managing editor of BET.com, executive producer of Teen Vogue and Them. In 2015, Payne NBCBLK, a section of NBCNews.com dedicated to elevating the conversation around Black identity, social issues, and culture.
The Daily, the podcast powered by New York Times journalism, has hired three producers:
- Carlos Prieto has joined as a producer. He was previously at POLITICO and served as the launching producer of a daily brief on energy policy, POLITICO Energy. Prieto began his career in audio at a radio news station in Washington, D.C.
- Will Reid has joined as a producer. He comes to The Times from “Today, Explained,” Vox’s daily news podcast and radio show. At Vox, he covered everything from inflation to the history of the internet. He was also a founding producer of “Recode Daily” and “Reset.”
- Nina Feldman has joined as a producer. She was previously at WHYY Public Radio in Philadelphia, where she was the station’s health reporter for more than four years. She also hosted the station's investigative podcast series, "Half Vaxxed."
Cole Behrens has joined The Columbus Dispatch as a reporter covering breaking news and public safety. He was most recently an associate editor at Ohio-based Athens News and has also worked at The Athens Messenger. Before that, Behrens interned at The Cincinnati Enquirer and The Athens News.
STAT has welcomed Jason Mast as general assignment reporter covering science, medicine and business. He spent the past almost-three years at Endpoint News, most recently as the editor. Mask has also served as a teaching fellow at Masa Israel Journey, a researcher at Northwest University, and a reporter at Bloomberg BNA.
Megan Farokhmanesh will join Wired May 23 as a senior writer/reporter covering games. She comes to the magazine from Axios, where she has been a gaming reporter since April 2021. Prior to that, Farokhmanesh reported on internet culture and the video game industry for The Verge and was also the deputy managing editor for Polygon at Vox Media.
Rogé Karma is the new senior editor of 'The Ezra Klein Show.' He joined the Audio team of The New York Times in late 2020 as a staff editor and has since worked with Klein and the production team to plan out episodes and series. Karma joined The Times from Vox, where he worked alongside Klein and helped produce wide-ranging, longform interviews for “The Ezra Klein Show,” when the podcast was part of Vox Media.
The Associated Press has named Sara Gillesby director of global video. She has been news director for the U.S. East region since 2018, overseeing all-format teams across 10 states from Ohio to Maine. Previously, Gillesby led video coverage of stories that resonated globally as video news assignment manager in New York for nine years. She joined AP as a video producer in 2005.
Vox Media has promoted Samantha Oltman to editorial director of the Vox science, climate, and ReCode teams. She has been at Vox Media since 2019 as the editor in chief of ReCode and before that spent three years at BuzzFeed as the deputy business and tech editor.
Bette Canter has joined Sportico as senior editor. She most recently worked for Hears Magazines, where she was a contributing editor and deputy editor of Runner's World & Bicycle. Before that, Canter was at Sports Illustrated as associate editor, producer, and fact-checker.
Skift has welcomed Tim Mullaney as a reporter covering travel technology. He also writes the Travel Tech Briefing and Travel Startup Funding columns. Mullaney is a veteran financial with more than three decades experience working for various media outlets including the USA Today, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, The Sun, and Dow Jones Newswires.
Marcus Gilmer will join Crain’s Chicago Business May 31 as associate managing editor for digital content creation. Gilmer was most recently the managing editor of Cleveland Clinic and before that worked for Mashable for four years. Gilmer is a former digital editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, and has also served as editor in chief of Chicagoist, associate editor of The A.V. Club, and a daily news blogger for Chicago Public Media WBEZ-FM.
The Triad Business Journal has tapped Carl Wilson as a special sections editor and data reporter. He writes primarily for Best Places to Work, Fast 50, Women in Business, and 40 Under 40 sections of the paper. Wilson spent his entire journalism career at the New & Record in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he spent 30 years as a restaurant, features and retail reporter.
MarketWatch has hired Zoe Yuqing Han as a personal finance reporter. She was previously an assistant producer and audio intern at the Financial Times and is a recent graduate of New York University with a a master's degree in journalism.
Ben Sherry is the newest staff reporter at Inc. Magazine. He joins the magazine from the Financial Times, where he spent four years as a reporter covering institutional investors, public pensions, and more for MandateWire. Prior to that, Sherry was an editorial intern at Investopedia.
CFO Journal has tapped Jennifer Williams-Alvarez as a reporter covering corporate taxes, audit and accounting in Europe, board issues and pensions, and other topics. She previously worked at Agenda Week, a Financial Times publication, for four years covering legal and regulatory stories. Before that, Williams-Alvarez worked at ALM Media as a reporter and Fox News as a legal researcher.
Alex Silverman has joined Sports Business Journal as a staff writer covering hockey and soccer. He most recently reported enterprise stories on topics of interest to high-level executives in the sports industry for Morning Consult. Before that, Silverman was a corporate communications manager for Univision's distribution and sports businesses.
Eli Rosenberg has joined NBC News as a reporter on the Tech Investigations Team to cover the intersection of technology and labor. He started May 9 and is based in the San Francisco bureau. Most recently, Rosenberg was a labor and work reporter at the Washington Post and before that he spent a decade in New York, where he worked at The New York Times, the Daily News, and the Brooklyn Paper.
KTVU-TV, the Fox station in Oakland, California, has promoted Mike Mibach to evening anchor; he replaces Frank Somerville. Mibach will anchor at 5, 6, 10 and 11 p.m. alongside Julie Haener. Since 2005, Mibach has anchored the weekday and weekend morning shows, the Noon newscast, and the 4 p.m. news. Before joining KTVU, he was a reporter and weekend evening anchor for KVOA in Tucson, Arizona.
ABC News has tapped Max Zahn as business and technology reporter. He focuses on covering breaking news and enterprise stories on Big Tech, economic trends, inequality, and labor. Zahn joins the network from Yahoo Finance, where he wrote enterprise stories and investigative pieces on Big Tech lobbying against privacy bills nationwide. As a freelance writer, Zahn's work has appeared in MONEY Magazine, Columbia Journalism Review, Religion Dispatches, In These Times, City Limits, Alternet, Lion's Roar, and other publications.
Chicago's Fox station WFLD-TV has realigned its Monday-through-Friday morning news anchor lineup:
- Scott Schneider and Anita Padilla will shift to anchoring “Good Day Chicago” from 4 to 7 a.m.
- Terrence Lee, Sylvia Perez and Anita Blanton will pick up at 7 to 10 a.m. Blanton just signed on from WAVY, the NBC affiliate in Norfolk, Virginia.
- Roseanne Tellez will continue to report for “Good Day Chicago” and anchor the station's noon newscast.
