Vanity Fair has named Jeff Giles executive Hollywood editor, a newly created position based in Los Angeles. He oversees the bureau and handles the assigning and editing impact entertainment stories across all platforms. Previously, Giles served as a VF contributing editor and as a contract writer for The New York Times. Before that, he was an editor at Entertainment Weekly where he oversaw the movie team and books coverage from 2006 to 2014. Giles has also held editorial positions at Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and Newsweek.
The Washington Post has hired two new general assignment reporters:
· Kim Bellware has joined the General Assignment news desk as a reporter and covers breaking news and write enterprise. She was previously a full-time freelancer in Chicago and has written for The New York Times, the Atlantic, Rolling Stone and Vice. Before that, she worked for HuffPost in Chicago, where she was a reporter and editor, and focused on breaking news, plus prisons and policing.
· Brittany Shammas has joined the General Assignment news desk as a reporter and writes breaking news and enterprise stories. She was previously with the Miami New Times, where she's written long-form and investigative stories, as well as daily news, since 2016. Before that, Shammas covered education for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Terry Nguyen has joined Vox as a staff writer for The Goods vertical and covers consumer culture. She also writes a weekly newsletter that breaks down the latest consumer trends, memes, and pop culture phenomena related to Generation Z. Nguyen previously contributed to Teen Vogue and Broadly and has also interned at the Washington Post.
CNBC’s Fast Money has appointed Ben Berna as a supervising producer. His responsibilities on the program include oversight of the valuable, sponsorship-related content the team produces for television and digital, as well as sales and strategic content to create additional sponsorship opportunities. Berna has been with CNBC since 2011, most recently as the director of market and digital news. Before that, he spent three years as senior producer for Squawk on the Street/Squawk Alley shows.
Shannon Bond has joined NPR Sept. 16 as technology correspondent, based in Silicon Valley. She previously covered technology for the Financial Times from San Francisco and focused on breaking news and unpacking the world of technology. Bond has been with FT for a decade and has served as a media and marketing correspondent in New York and has also covered the beverage and tobacco industry. She also hosted FT's award-winning podcast about business and economics.
Crunchbase News has welcomed Sophia Kunthara as a late-stage venture reporter covering big rounds, IPO filings and other major news impacting the mature startup space. She comes from a year-long Hears Journalism Fellowship and served as a business reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle and Connecticut Post. Before her fellowship, she interned at Reuters on its business desk and the Arizona Republic’s copy and breaking news desks, among other roles.
Alex Soderstrom to has joined the Orlando Business Journal as a reporter on the technology beat. He was previously an intern at the Nashville Business Journal, a sister paper owned by American City Business Journals. Soderstrom has also contributed to the Atlanta Business Chronicle and Georgia Political Review.
Kaiser Health News has tapped Hannah Norman as digital producer. She was most recently a reporter for the San Francisco Business Times where she covered healthcare, transportation, cleantech. She joined the Business Times in May 2018 as a digital producer and before that served as a design and marketing fellow for AtlanticLIVE.
Allen Devlin is the newest general assignment reporter for NBC-owned WYFF-TV in Greenville, South Carolina. He is a recent graduate of Colombia University’s graduate journalism program and is the recipient of two Student Emmys from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, as well as the Mark of Excellence award from the South Carolina Society of Professional Journalist.
WLS-TV, the ABC affiliate in Chicago, will welcome Samantha Chatman as consumer reporter on Sept. 30. She comes to Chicago from Fort Worth, Texas, where she spent the last three years as a consumer reporter at KXAS-TV. Prior to that, Chatman was a multimedia journalist at WEEK-TV in Peoria, Illinois.
