Kate Lowenstein is the new Well deputy editor at The New York Times. She starts August 8 after spending eight years at VICE, most recently as the global editor in chief. Lowenstein created and launched VICE’s health and wellness site, Tonic, in late 2016, and played an instrumental role in bringing health and science reporting standards to VICE more broadly. Before VICE, she was health director at Prevention magazine.
The Boston Globe has promoted Leah Becerra to senior digital editor, upped from editor of mobile applications. She has been at the paper since June 2021 and before that she was digital and audience engagement editor at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. Becerra also worked for The Kansas City Star, Newsy, Gawker and the Omaha World-Herald.
BuzzFeed News has announced two editorial staff updates:
- Brandon Wall has moved into the newly created position of director of newsroom strategy and experiments. Most recently, he was a news curation director at the outlet and has been on staff for seven years.
- Jamilah King has been upped to managing editor. She joined BuzzFeed News in 2021 and spent the past year as deputy inequality editor, managing and editing a team of reporters who cover racial, gender, and economic inequality. Prior to that, King was a race and justice reporter at Mother Jones for four years.
The Associated Press has announced two key appointments:
- Tom Verdin has been named democracy news editor; he will remain based in Sacramento, California. Verdin has been at AP for more than two decades and for the past seven years has managed AP’s signature coverage of state government in all 50 statehouses.
- Katie Oyan has been promoted to deputy news director for Local News Success. She joined the AP in 2005 as night supervisor in Helena, Montana. She later moved to Phoenix to join the West Desk’s inaugural editing crew in 2009 and has since held various leadership roles on the desk.
Maddie Bender has joined The Daily Beast as innovation reporter. She was most recently a freelance fact-checker for The Wall Street Journal, where she worked on “The Future of Everything,” a podcast about science and technology. Before that, Bender spent four years as a freelance writer covering stories about science, technology, and health for outlets including Scientific American, VICE Motherboard, Popular Science, Men’s Health, Inverse, Massive Science, and other.
The Washington Post has hired Mark Johnson as a science writer. He comes to The Post from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, where he covered science and health for the past 14 years. Johnson is a 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner and was also a Pulitzer finalist in 2003, 2006 and 2014 for stories that ranged from chronic wasting in deer to rabies to gross anatomy.
Slate has promoted Susan Matthews to executive editor. She was most recently the news director of the magazine and the host of the Slate Plus podcast “Slow Burn." Matthews joined the staff in 2016 as science editor and before that worked for the National Audubon Society and Everyday Health.
Valerie Yurk has joined CQ Roll Call as an energy and environment reporter. She joins the outlet from Politico, where she spent eight months as a legislative reporter. Before that, she was a reporting fellow at E&E News and a contributor to Planet Forward.
PAPER magazine has named Justin Moran editor in chief. He has been at the magazine since 214, when he joined the staff as an editorial intern. Since then, Moran has held various editorial positions including digital managing editor, and most recently, digital director.
Jillian Wilson is the new wellness reporter at HuffPost, where she writes health and wellness stories. She previously worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she spent two years as a service editor and a freelance events writer before that.
Bloomberg News has hired Brandon T. Harden as a markets editor. He was most recently a senior leadership editor at Business Insider and covered the lives of C-level executives, those in their orbit, and the leadership experience. Prior to that, Harden was an arts and culture reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Peter Blanchard has joined the Indianapolis Business Journal as a reporter covering the statehouse and economic development. Previously, he was a general assignment reporter for The Reporter-Times in Martinsville, Indiana, and before that served as the news editor for Patch.com in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
Ann Gehan is the new junior retail reporter at INSIDER, covering payments, retail technology, e-commerce and fintech. She previously spent six months as a reporting fellow at Business Insider and before that worked as a DMN Local freelance contributor for The Dallas Morning News.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has reassigned food writer Daniel Neman to the retail beat on the Business Desk. He has been a food writer at the paper for the past eight years and before that reported for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Rachel Ravina has joined the Philadelphia Business Journal as a reporter covering technology, innovation and higher education. She joined the paper from MediaNews Group, where she covered government beats for Montgomery County, Norristown and the Norristown Area School District in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Prior to that, Ravia was a staff writer at Flag Publications in Maryland.
Bloomberg Law has tapped Rachel S. Hunt as a full-time digital editor. She has been filling this role since January on a freelancer basis. Prior to that, Hunt was director of digital strategy at The Diamondback, University of Maryland’s student paper. She has also previously interned at The Arizona Republic.
CBS News Detroit, the hyper-local streaming and broadcast news service launching this Fall by WWJ-TV (CBS 62) and WKBD-TV (CW50) in Detroit, has hired several staff:
- Shaina Humphries has joined the staff as an anchor. She was most recently a co-anchor of the weekday 5, 6, 10 and 11 p.m. newscasts at WTXF Philadelphia since February 2019.
- Rachelle Graham has joined the staff as an anchor. Most recently, she anchored and reported for the NBC, Fox and CW affiliates in Flint, Michigan.
- Amyre Makupson has joined the staff as executive producer of community impact. Most recently, she was a director of marketing and PR at Central Georgia Technical College.
Chris O’Brien has joined WKRN-TV, the Nashville ABC affiliate as state Capitol reporter. He comes from Spectrum News 1 in Charlotte, which he joined in June 2021 after graduating from the University of Florida.
KARE-TV, the NBC station in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has hired Morgan Wolfe as a weekend anchor. She joins the station from KSL 5 TV in Salt Lake City, where she was an anchor/reporter for two years. Prior to that, Wolfe worked for WMTV-TV in Madison, Wisconsin.
WTXF-TV, the Fox affiliated television station in Philadelphia, has welcomed Shiba Russell as an evening anchor. She will anchor the station’s weekday 5, 6, 10 and 11 p.m. newscasts alongside Jason Martinez, and starts on August 15. Russell comes from WXIA in Atlanta, where she was the weekday evening anchor. Before that, she worked at WNBC in New York.
Ty Hawkins has replaced Randi Naughton as the anchor at KTVI-TV, the Fox station in St. Louis, Missouri. Naughton retired from the station after 30 years in TV news. Hawkins has been at the station since 2020 and before that worked as an anchor at KFBB ABC/FOX Montana.
