At a time when people feel divided and voices may struggle to be heard, we look to those who unite, inspire and change the world for the better. Today, we honor and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of advancing equality, social justice and economic opportunity for all. While the 2021 celebrations will be mostly virtual, it is a good time to think about what the day means to us as individuals and ask how we can make a difference. We spoke to colleagues from across Cision, who shared their thoughts on what MLK Day means to them:
Allison Richard, Opportunities Manager, Members & Content:
“Dr. King’s message is reflective of centuries of perseverance against racism and discrimination. For me, MLK day is about the countless champions who fought and are fighting for equality. Although we are still having these discussions and actions need to still take place to combat racism 40 years after his death, I’m happy to see the worldwide progress and stances against racism and discrimination that have occurred over this past year. Action begets change.”
Faith Primacio, Benefits Manager:
“The quote ’I have a dream’ really resonated with me, especially as a shy child, because it was the first time I realized it was okay to give voice to your dreams. As an ethic minority woman, I have had first-hand experience of gender inequality and culturally insensitive experiences in my life. This quote still tells me it’s okay to dream for yourself, but it’s even better to dream for others. The quote also tells me, when you take a break from dreaming, find ways to make those dreams a reality and impact change.”

“As a first generation South Asian American, MLK Day reminds me that each and every person has a place here in the United States. Someone once told me that ’diversity cannot exist without inclusion,’ and MLK Day reminds me every year of the importance of diversity and that we all must continue standing up for Dr. King’s message.”

“MLK to me, is someone who fought so I can be seen. So, I can dare to dream of a future and thrive. He is someone who gave so many people who look like me a voice. A voice to speak up and say… I Am Here. I often wonder where I would be today if it wasn’t for brave people like him who dedicated themselves to these causes. His dream went way beyond the borders of the U.S. As I sit here in Canada, I hope that one day we will all live in a world where we are not judged by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.”

“MLK Day to me means a time to reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of inclusion and fight against racial injustices. Dr. King was the first champion and ambassador in my mind of diversity, equity and inclusion. MLK Day is a reminder that as a country we have made positive social progress, even though there is still so much to be done. I am optimistic about our future and am confident that if we all take positive actions, big or small, we will live in a better world—one that is equitable and unified.”
