Media Moves at InformationWeek & Thrillist, LA Times Names Lifestyle AME

InformationWeek has hired Joao-Pierre Ruth as senior writer. He was previously a journalist and researcher at Blueshift Research for more than a year, and before that had a brief stint as a freelancer for DealFlow Media. Ruth has also worked for SJR as a senior editor, New Jersey Business magazine as a freelance writer, and at tech news site Xconomy as the New York editor. 

Joumana Khatib has moved to the Books desk of The New York Times as audience editor, where she helps the desk grow and engage audiences, and meet their needs around books. She was most recently a senior staff editor on the paper's Express desk, and has been with The Times since 2014 when she joined the staff as news assistant. 

Thrillist has welcomed Joseph Hernandez as senior travel editor; he will focus on lifestyle content falling under the banner of travel, travel industry, airlines/cruises/transportation, food, wine, and travel deals.  Hernandez was most recently the food and dining deputy editor for the Chicago Tribune, and had been with the paper since 2016 when he joined as a writer. Before that, he worked for The Wine Enthusiast. 

The Los Angeles Times has announced the addition of a new assistant managing editor, and the appointment of a tech and business editor: 

  • Stuart Emmrich is the paper's new assistant managing editor for lifestyle. He comes from The New York Times, were worked since 2002, most recently as an editor for Sunday Business. 
  • Ben Muessig is now the technology and business editor, upped from tech editor -- a position he has held since he joined the staff in 2016. He came to the LA Times from the  San Francisco Chronicle, where he served as business editor. 

Tyler R. Tynes has been named staff writer for The Ringer, covering the intersection of race, politics and sports. Tynes was previously a reporter for Vox Media's SB Nation, and before that reported on the politics desk at HuffPost. He has also worked for The Press of Atlantic City, The Philadelphia Daily News, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. 

CoStar, the online destination for  commercial real estate professionals, has brought on Richard Lawson as an entrepreneurship reporter. He is based in Atlanta and will write stories on entrepreneurs who are seeking office and retail spaces. Lawson most recently worked as an editor at Cains Communication, and before that has had stints at the Nashville Business Journal, The Tennessean, Nashville Post and the Nashville City Paper. 

Entercom's KDKA-AM news radio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has named two new on-air personalities for the station's midday and afternoon drives:

  • Wendy Bell is the new PM drive time on-air host and can be heard from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. She will co-host afternoons with station veteran Marty Griffin. Bell was previously an anchor and reporter for WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh.
  • Lynne Hayes-Freeland has been promoted to midday host and will be on-air from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. She is the first African-American to host full-time weekday show at the station, and began her broadcast career as a producer for KDKA in 1976.
