Jezebel has hired Alexis Sobel Fitts as deputy editor. She most recently spent a year at Wired as a senior editor, and before that reported for Columbia Journalism Review and focused on the personalities who shaped media in the digital age and how technology changed journalism. As a freelancer she wrote about science, mental health, gender, technology, and the media, and her work has appeared in Esquire, Popular Mechanics, MotherJones, and Salon.
The National Journal has announced the promotion of two of its staff:
· Mackenzie Weinger is now the senior policy editor. She joined the outlet in 2018 and has since served as the policy editor. Before that, Weinger reported for The Cipher Brief and Politico.
· Alex Clearfield has been promoted to associate editor and covers politics, Congress, campaigns and legislation. He most recently served as a correspondent and has been on staff since 2017, when he joined after three years at CQ Roll Call.
Emmy-nominated journalist and author Shushannah Walshe has been named editor at large at the Independent Journal Review, a newly created position at the outlet. She has previously worked for ABC News as a producer for 20/20 and ABC World News, and has covered politics for The Daily Beast, and before that was a reporter and producer at Fox News from August 2001 until the end of the 2008 presidential campaign.
The New York Times has hired Chris Hamby, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist currently at BuzzFeed News, as an investigative reporter based in Washington, D.C. Before joining BuzzFeed, Chris was a reporter at the Center for Public Integrity, where he worked on a yearlong project on how doctors and lawyers representing the coal industry withheld evidence of black lung and denied miners’ benefits. It was awarded the Pulitzer for investigative reporting in 2014.
Ahmed Al-Kalby is the new director of OTT programming at Newsy. He was most recently at the Gannett/USA Today Network and worked as a director of product management for video. Prior to that, he worked at XUMO and Viant Technology.
The Baffler has promoted Jonathon Sturgeon to editor in chief, upped from senior editor. He was previously deputy editor of artnet News, literary editor at Flavorwire, and senior editor at The American Reader. The Baffler covers left-wing political criticism, cultural analysis, short stories, poems and art.
Todd Mokhtari has been named president and general manager of KNSD-TV, the NBC station in San Diego, California. He comes from KNBC-TV in Los Angeles where he served as president of news for seven years. Before that, Mokhtari worked at KIRO-TV in Seattle as news director and web manager.
WLS-AM talk radio in Chicago has elevated news veteran Lauren Cohn to afternoon anchor. She moved into a full-time role at the station after serving as a contributing reporter and fill-in host. She has previously worked at several Chicago TV news stations, including Fox Chicago, CBS 2 and ABC 7.
Nick Camino is the new weekend sports anchor for WKYC-TV, the NBC station in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a former radio sportscaster and previously worked for WTAM-AM in Cleveland.
