The Verge has announced two top editorial promotions:
· Helen Havlak is now vice president of all editorial operations. She was most recently the editorial director of the site and joined the staff in 2014 as engagement editor.
· T.C. Sottek is the new executive editor and oversees general technology topics. He was previously the managing editor of the site for four years and joined the staff in 2011 as news editor.
David Crawshaw has joined the Washington Post as an Asia-based news editor, based in Hong Kong. He comes from The Wall Street Journal where he has most recently served as deputy foreign editor based in Hong Kong. In a decade at The Journal, he also worked as a news editor in New York and London and as a real-time editor and deputy Asia business editor in Hong Kong.
MediaWise, the nonprofit digital literacy project funded by Google and the Poynter Institute and aims to teach teenagers how to sort fact from fiction, has hired Alex Mahadevan as senior multimedia reporter. He was most recently a data journalist at The Penny Hoarder where he analyzed data to find stories. Prior to that, he was the news innovation editor for Observer Media Group and news editor at Pelican Press before that.
Megan Campbell has joined The Puget Sound Business Journal as a reporter covering healthcare, biotech and retail. She comes from Sound Publishing where she worked as a reporter and copy editor. Before that she was a freelance reporter for the Snohomish County Tribune and Everett Tribune in Washington state.
NBC News Digital has named Alison Morris anchor and host for NBC News NOW streaming program, covering news, current affairs, government, and politics. She was previously a business reporter/anchor at Fox’s WNYW-TV in New York and before that worked for WRIC-TV in Harford, Connecticut. Morris started her career based in Paris as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal Europe covering business and advertising.
Mary Field, executive producer of WTTW “Chicago Tonight” since 1996, has announced her retirement from the station, effective July 12. Field joined the public television station’s flagship news program after working as a producer for Tribune Broadcasting WGN-TV, assistant news director at WIND 560-AM, and a reporter for City News Bureau of Chicago.
The Chicago Reader has appointed Kerry Reid as editor of the paper’s theater and dance coverage. She is a longtime freelance theatre critic and arts journalist and has contributed to the Chicago Tribune since 1993. She also had a brief stint at the Reader as an editorial assistant in 2003.
Saul Gonzalez is the new co-host of “The California Report” on KQED-FM, the NPR radio station in San Francisco; he started July 8. Gonzalez broadcasts from Los Angeles alongside co-host Lily Jamali. He most recently spent eight years at KCRW-FM in Santa Monica, California, as a producer and reporter. Before that, he spent a decade at PBS Television where he produced for the national show “Religion & Ethics Newsweekly” and served as a contributing correspondent for “The NewsHour.”
Tony Atkins will move to NBC’s WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in August. He comes from WHBQ-TV in Memphis, Tennessee, where he spent the last three years as a general assignment reporter. Before that he was a digital content producer at WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a digital media specialist at the Austin American-Statesman before that.
