Media Moves at Thrillist & SB Nation Radio, Charlotte Observer Names Managing Editor

Sarah Kerr has re-joined the news team of The New York Times as a video journalist focused on United States politics. She will work on the 2020 race and closely with the Politics desk. Kerr first came to The Times as an intern in 2017 and was a go-to on everything from the Mueller investigation and the Trump administration to Bitcoin. Before that, she worked at Witness, a human rights organization focused on the use of video as a tool for citizen journalism and documentation.

CNBC has announced two promotions:

·         Lacy O'Toole is now the managing editor, business news. She was most recently the VP of news coverage for five years and has been with CNBC since 2002 when she joined as a newsdesk producer. Throughout the years, she has also served as Los Angeles bureau chief and assistant managing editor.

·         Jason Gewirtz has been promoted to vice president, news at CNBC and oversees the markets and data teams, field producers and works closely with show teams to guide coverage. He has been with CNBC since 2001 and most recently served as the executive producer of “The Halftime Report.”

Taylor Batten has been named managing editor of The Charlotte Observer. The veteran editor has been with the paper for more than two decades, most recently as the editor of the opinion pages for 11 years.  From 1995 until 2008, Batten served as copy desk chief.

The Thrillist has appointed Meghan Kirsch chief content officer; she starts in August. Kirsc is currently wrapping up her duties as SVP of marketing and creative at VICE, apposition she has held since 2017. She joined VICE in 2016 from the A&E Network where she served as VP of brand creative and marketing for three years.

Sports network SB Nation Radio will launch “The Main Event with Cody Stoots and Jake Asman” July 22. The program will air weekdays 4-8 p.m. ET.

·         Cody Stoots will co-host the new show. He joined the network in March as a weekend host. Prior to that, he worked at SportsMap and KILT-AM.  

·         Jake Asman will also co-host the program. He has been with SB Nation Radio since 2017 and most recently served as host of “The Power Hour” which aired weeknights, from 7-8 p.m. ET.

The Chicago Defender, the weekly source for local and community news from Chicago's influential African-American communities, has ceased its print publication and will continue as a digital outlet. The last print issue was July 10. The paper was founded in 1905 by Robert S. Abbott for primarily African-American readers, and has since become one of the most prominent news sources in Chicago.
