Forget the snow; start planning your garden in January

Planning a Garden in January

Planning a Garden in January

When: January 1 – 31

What: For avid gardeners, it’s never too early to start planning for spring, as a variety of plants require preparation long before the frost and snow melt away. Observed annually in January, National Mailorder Gardening Month is an invitation to dive into colorful catalogues and let the warm weather ideas flow.

Background: Currently celebrating its 75th year, the Mailorder Gardening Association is a member organization for gardening magazines and mail order companies. It promotes catalogues and is a premier resource for gardeners, providing gardening guides and tips.

Story Pitch: Promote gardening tools and products this month, whether they’re sold in stores, online or through catalogues. Nature groups and parks can provide information about local growing conditions and tips for those already starting to think about their spring gardens.

The Story Hook: First Lady Michelle Obama garnered attention this spring when she led the planting of a new garden on the White House grounds – the first garden at the White House since World War II. Has the presence of such a public garden had an influence on neighborhood green thumbs? Consider the following when making your pitch:

  • What new organic or environmentally friendly products and plant foods are available?
  • The White House has installed hoop houses to allow for year-round growing. What innovations have allowed gardeners to extend the growing season?
  • What can gardeners do now to prepare for spring planting?
  • Have community gardens gained popularity in recent years in light of the economy?

Tips: Provide the media outlet you’re pitching with the information for a local gardening expert or someone from a horticultural group. Contact a nearby school and find out what gardening programs might be shaping up for the spring.
