Cyber Monday in Social Media
Seeing as most people online were talking almost exclusively about Cyber Monday on Monday, I decided to set up a few searches in our Visible Intelligence platform to analyze what was being said.
By and large, people reacted positively to Cyber Monday (not a surprise because who doesn’t like a great deal?!)
But how did the retailers hold up in head to head comparisons?
Amazon and Best Buy competed for first place, with Best Buy taking the prize in terms of share of voice. Target had a slight edge over Walmart (good news for them since Walmart dominated on Black Friday. Click here for more info on the Black Friday retail battle.), and Overstock was hanging in there with just over 1% of the volume.
What about using online conversations to predict popular gifts this holiday season?
Using our Topic Discovery function in VI I was able to compare the most common things people were talking about in conjunction with both Cyber Monday and Black Friday. Based on the graphic above, I would guess that some of the popular items to give and receive this year will be:
- Xbox (@listia and listia both refer to ads promoting the xbox)
- iPad 2
- 40” TV
This article also takes a look at popular gifts this year.
You may notice that my predictions are all based on the Cyber Monday data. It’s interesting to note that the most common words used around Black Friday don’t focus on the items purchased. Rather, the Walmart pepper spray incident received a lot of chatter, as did the Rebecca Black ad for Kohl’s. Curious what the “displays video” term referred to under Black Friday, I dug into VI a little further. It turns out that was referencing a video in which Walmart customers destroy an in-store display. That would also explain why “destroy” shows up.
What do you think? Did you make any Cyber Monday purchases? Tell me your experiences in the comments, I’d love to hear!
