Start the year by celebrating the maintenance of a healthy weight

What: January is typically a time of new beginnings. With the start of a new year, people make resolutions to quit smoking, to start exercising more or to go on new diets. One thing you don’t often hear is people making a resolution to stop dieting. On Jan. 15, observe Healthy Weight Week.

Background: Sponsored by Healthy Weight Network, Healthy Weight Week celebrates healthful lifestyles, including good eating habits and maintaining a good weight, instead of fad dieting and yo-yo weight loss. This weeklong event focuses on changing your lifestyle to stay fit and happy for a lifetime, while honoring the diversity of all shapes and sizes.

Story Pitch: A variety of companies and organizations have an opportunity to use this week to promote healthy weight solutions. Gymnasiums and athletic centers may focus on healthy lifestyles by educating clients on the importance of integrating an exercise routine into their lives. Dieticians should advertise their services as healthy eating gurus, while farmers and local produce providers are able to promote the need for a diet filled with fruits and vegetables. By educating patients on healthy weights and proper nutrition, physicians and family doctors can also take advantage of this event.

Story Hook: According to the Centers for Disease Control, as a person’s weight increases, they can become subject to Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease and other health risks. Consider the following questions when making your pitch:

Tips: A dietician who is familiar with healthy weights and proper eating habits can discuss the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and a healthy body image. In addition, someone who maintains a healthy weight through proper diet and exercise is a great person to discuss healthy weight and body image.
