You arrive at work for a normal day of business. There are meetings planned, campaigns to be developed and questions that need answering and then it happens – the crisis.

In 2014, a crisis can happen to anyone at any time. It doesn’t have to be a natural disaster, there can be business challenges or threats to reputation that emerge and become an organisational crisis.

For years the communication departments controlled the messages and information. They decided what to release and when.

Everyone remembers the process: incident happens, organisation decides what to say, organisation then tells the media, organisation then decides when and how to provide updates to the media. That is no longer the situation.

The growth of citizen journalists and the fact that everyone has the ability to take footage and post it into the digital world has changed crisis communications. There are a whole new set of considerations from making sure staff are all on message through to dealing with the 24/7 of social media.

Since mistakes only fan the flames of crisis, it is important that we take an opportunity to learn from agencies that have lived through a crisis in the age of immediate media. Most importantly we need to ensure we are ready to deal with the crisis that arrives unexpectedly to disrupt our day.
