Social Media Updates: JOMO, Mobile Pinning and Instagram Ads

Users constantly adopt new behaviors, preferences and technologies. Social networks play catch up, adding new features and making changes to user experiences.

This creates new opportunities and challenges for PR and marketing pros. But because the updates roll out so quickly (and sometimes without much fanfare), it’s easy to miss the latest changes.

Here’s a roundup of this week’s social media news and updates that may impact how you do social PR or marketing:

Facebook

Facebook Social Media Updates

99 Days of Freedom – A creative agency has started “99 Days of Freedom,” which encourages people to take a hiatus from Facebook. Facebook’s recent controversial mood evaluation study inspired the JOMO (joy of missing out) campaign. The founders say social moderation is beneficial. So far, only 2,600 of Facebook’s 1 billion users have accepted the challenge.

Why does this matter to communicators? It’s just reinforces how important Facebook has become to people.

Slingshot shot? – Facebook’s photo sharing app Slingshot is young, but some think it’s already failing. Since its mid-June release, it has gradually fallen down the App Store’s rankings.

Lockscreen notifications – Facebook tapped its test group of Android users to beta lockscreen notifications for new message activity. The test was brief, lasting less than a day.

Twitter

Twitter Social Media Updates

World Cup records – Germany set records on and off the pitch with its 7-1 drubbing of Brazil. The game inspired a record 35.6 million tweets in 92 minutes, about 6,449 tweets per second. Germany’s fifth goal sparked 580,601 tweets in one minute. Woah!

Buy Now button not a boon? – The long awaited Buy Now Button for Twitter might not be worth the wait. AdAge notes that email is 40 times more effective at acquiring consumers than Facebook and Twitter combined. Email also has an average order value 17 percent higher than social media.

The biggest hurdle, according to AdAge? People use social media to connect, not buy.

The social network says that connected provides relevant and timely reasons to reach out and keep in touch with your network.

Apply for an MBA – Looking to advance your career with an MBA? Getting accepted to a program just got a smidge easier. Cornell’s MBA programs allow applicants to fill in employment history, educational background and other information from their LinkedIn profiles.

Pinterest

Pinterest - Social Media Updates

New follow button – Pinterest updated their Follow button with the goal of making it easier for people to find their favorite brands and publishers on the social network. The new button will show a pop up that shows your account’s latest pins. It also allows people to follow you without taking them from your website.

Mobile and social married – A comScore study shows that more than 70 percent of time spent on social occurs on smartphones and tablets. The most mobile-centric networks? Twitter and Pinterest. Three-quarters of all content shared on these networks occurs via mobile. Only half of Facebook’s sharing occurs on mobile.

Instagram

TV ads –Instagram ads have been few and far between and primarily from fashion-oriented brands. No longer. For about a month, the social network has featured campaigns for TV shows, which have had strong engagement.
