Media Moves at AP, Business Insider & Kiplinger, Two New Digital Anchors at KTLA-TV
Emily Schmall has relocated to New Delhi, India and is now South Asia correspondent for the Associated Press. She was previously a correspondent from the Fort Worth, Texas bureau of the AP since she joined the news service in 2014. Prior to that, she served as a foreign stringer for The New York Times and Reuters.
- Pamela Engels has been promoted to news director, upped from deputy editor. She oversees the global news teams for Business Insider. Engles has been with the magazine since 2013 when she joined the staff as a reporter. Prior to that, she worked for the Associated Press.
- Megan Willett has been promoted to executive editor at Insider covering culture and lifestyle. She was previously the deputy editor for the outlet, and joined the staff in 2016 as senior editor. Prior to that, she worked for Tech Insider and Business Insider.
Alex Van Abbema has joined the Minneapolis/St.Paul Business Journal as a reporter covering restaurants, retail, food, beverage and business travel. He comes from 10 Missions Media, where he spent the last year as a writer. Van Abbema is a 2017 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
BuzzFeed News Opinion has launched its first podcast titled “What’s Left?” and hosted by Sarah Leonard, executive editor of The Appeal and a regular contributor to Dissent and The Nation. "What's Left?" debuted in August and airs weekly. It features people at the crossroads of the new American politics.
Brendan Pedersen has been hired by Kiplinger as business reporter covering personal finance for Kiplinger. He started Sept. 10. Pedersen comes from a three-month stint at BusinessDen.com, a site covering business news in Colorado. He is a recent graduate of DePaul University in Chicago, and has also interned at Dow Jones. h/t Talking Biz News
OZY has brought on Michelle Bruton as sports editor based in Chicago. She was previously a sports and entertainment senior editor at Time Inc's FanSided for less than a year, and before that contributed to OZY on a freelancer basis. Founded in 2013, OZY is a news and culture online publication dedicated to features on people, places, trends, ideas and opinions before it's covered by mainstream media.
WPEN-FM sports radio in Burlington, New Jersey, has promoted Eric Camille to assistant program director, upped from executive producer; he began his new duties on Aug. 24. Camille has been with the station since 2009. Prior to that he worked for the "Doing Time with Ron Kuby" show on WABC-AM radio in New York.
Samantha Cortese and Natalie Lizarraga have been appointed digital anchors of the newly launched KTLA.com daily newscasts at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Lizarraga was previously an entertainment/traffic anchor for Sinclair Broadcast Group's ABC22/FOX 45 in Dayton, Ohio. Cortese comes from "Good Morning Tucson" on KGUN-TV, where she spent two years as an anchor. KTLA-TV is the CW-affiliated television station in Los Angeles.
