Is your social network limited to people who are actually likely to be interested in what you share, or does it encapsulate anyone and everyone who comes across your path?

If it’s the latter, this article is for you. With social media, quality over quantity is really the best strategy.

Why You Want Fewer Followers

Okay, so it’s not that you want few followers; it’s more that it’s uber important that the people who do follow you are a part of your target audience. Why get someone to follow you who isn’t interested in your content and will never buy from you?

On the other hand, keeping your circle close-knit means you can better interact one-on-one with more of your network. You can have meaningful conversations that might actually lead to a long-term business relationship.

But how do you find these highly-targeted folks?

1. Start With Who You Know IRLfollow-social-media

The best place to begin building your social community? The people you already know. This can include existing and past customers, email contacts and people you’ve met at industry events. Make a point to connect socially right after a big event so you can foster the relationship through that channel.

2. Find Social Influencers

Connecting with people who make a splash in your industry can be a huge boon for your brand. A single tweet from them about your product could result in many of their own followers clicking and buying from you.

Identify the people who are influencing others on social media and start engaging with them. Build a relationship with them before asking for anything. Then, when you think the timing is right, consider offering a product for review, hosting a giveaway through their social media or blog or finding another way to partner together.


3. Follow (Relevant) People Who Share Your Content

The people who are posting about your blog content or retweeting you are likely just the people you want to connect with. A few times a week, scroll through who’s been sharing your content and click on their profiles. If they fit the bill, follow them.

4. Leverage Hashtags

Hashtags are meant to organize content on social media. Once you’ve identified the hashtags that your audience is using, spend some time sifting through the updates using them. This is great fodder for people to follow. You can also use these hashtags to attract more of those people to follow you.

However you find people to follow on social media, do so with care. Boosting your numbers just to feel good won’t help you achieve your social media goals and will waste your time. On the other hand, being picky about who you follow may help your conversion rate.
