You know that guest blogging on other authority websites is one way to establish your thought leadership and expertise. But did you also know that accepting guest bloggers on your business blog is a way to get great content that they’ll help you promote?

I’ve been using this strategy for several years on my blog, and I’m to the point where I have so many fabulous guest bloggers that I rarely need to write content myself (which gives me more time to write on sites like Cision!).

But it took a while to attract the right kinds of guest bloggers. In the early days, I got a lot of:

  • People who didn’t write about my core topics (content marketing and social media)
  • Bad writers that required a lot of editing
  • Bloggers who did nothing to promote the content they published on my blog

I’ve since honed my strategy and gotten super picky about who I accept as a guest blogger. Here are some tips that I can vouch work.

1. Limit the Topics You Want Covered

The other day I got a pitch from someone who wrote a cooking blog and wanted to contribute a post on boiling eggs. Hello?? My company is Egg Marketing, but clearly this person didn’t read a single blog post nor my blogging guidelines.

But even if someone pitches a topic near what you’re looking for, I encourage you to still be picky. What subject is your blog known for? The more niche it is, the better the experts that you’ll attract.

2. Invite Influencers to Contribute

If no one’s banging down your door to contribute on your blog, go looking for them. Consider who the bloggers are that you admire on other blogs in your industry, and reach out to invite them to contribute. Often, these bloggers are looking for an opportunity to connect with the very people who read your blog, and will gladly accept your offer.

3. Make Your Blog Appealing

Blogs that have high, focused traffic are the most appealing to great writers. So make sure you’re continually boosting traffic to your blog and promoting the posts as they go live. You may have to “sell” your blog to more experienced bloggers, so make sure it’s attractive.

4. Always, Always Promote the Content on Social Media

One of the main reasons someone would want to be a guest blogger on your site is to expand their reach. If you have, for example, 5,000 social media followers who fit the demographic that blogger is looking for, you will give them a major value-add if you heavily promote their post to your social media networks. Make sure to tag the blogger so she sees you marketing her post for her.

5. Look for Long-Term Relationships

My favorite kind of guest blogger is one who comes back consistently every month or two with another great post. Once you’ve established a relationship with a skilled blogger, you have less work to do to edit future posts, and that is a blessing.

Inviting guest bloggers to contribute content on your blog is a fantastic way to attract more readers and maintain consistently great content for your audience.
